Perhapes the machine is to slow. It is a Pentium II 350 mhz with 128 RAM running Windows 98SE fresh install.

RealVNC, AVG Anti Virus and Tiny Personal Firewall are the only other programs running on it besides the latest registered version of Multiping.

About every 24 hours it sets off one of the alarms sounds (even though the servers that it monitors are running fine) and locks up.

Reboot is the only way to get things running again.

Nothing in any of the logs.

Resources are at 78 - 80 percent free.

Any ideas?

Hi, Tim.

We do some testing here on a 600mhz machine, but there shouldn't be any problems with a 350. I suspect something with the network stack under Windows 98, over time.

How many targets are you monitoring? What ping interval are you using? What kind of targets are you monitoring (ie: local servers, internet servers, etc), and what latencies and packet loss characterstics are you seeing? We'll see if we can do anything to duplicate this behavior.

Monitoring 5 machines on a 10/100 local network and one remote website.

Ping times are good with no failures. (unless server is down)

1 minute intervals as I run an alert service and the servers must be up.

It does seem to be related to TCP/IP in some way and is not Multiping specifc as I have the same issue with other monitoring software on that machine. (ran a different program with same results) The Netbeui continues to work, but the TCP/IP goes down.

I have tried different ping times and packet size. Played with the MTU settings and still it locks up after 24 hours or so.

I hate to install NT4 on the machine as Windows 98SE is just plain easier to setup and use but will install NT4 if that would solve the issue. (Win2000 may slow the machine down to much)

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Tim

Hi, Tim.

We set up Win98SE 600 mhz machine (the slowest machine we have in our test fleet) and have been running it since Friday with 2.5 second ping interval, with 5 LAN targets and 1 internet target.

It's still running, with seemingly no problems.

We don't have any of the other utilities installed (RealVNC, AVG Anti Virus, Tiny Personal Firewall), so we're not running the exact same software as you. We're planning to let it run 7 days just to make sure we can't reproduce without any additional software, and then we'll add some of those tools to the game.

I'm not sure if you have a hardware firewall to protect that machine, but if so you might try uninstalling some of those utilities to see if it makes a difference. Just because the problem is TCP/IP related, you might start with the firewall.

Let us know your success on continuing efforts here, and we'll do the same.

I might have found the problem and it was related to how one of my routers handled that particular machine. 30 hours and counting now.

Thanks

It's good to hear you found the problem. We've been running our MultiPing test for a week solid on a 128mb Windows 98 SE machine with 6 targets (5 LAN, 1 WAN) and 2.5 second Interval and it's still running just fine (over 200,000 samples now).

Let us know if you run into any additional problems.

the machine is too slow, you have to upgrade your system in order to install avg antivirus and a tiny personal firewall.
