I have DSL. I can't Ping in msdos or with pingplotter. And one would think that it would mean I wasn't getting any packets back due to someone's security settings or something but that's not the response I get. PP says "couldn't resolve host name www.yahoo.com" for example. That doesn't make any sense to me. MSDOS ping says "unkown host". I have no problems getting to yahoo or google or anything so I can't understand this. ANyone have any ideas on what this means? Thanks for your help! <img src="/forums/images/icons/confused.gif" alt="" />

Well, that is quite odd!

Do you have zonealarm or something similar running on your PC that might be blocking DNS services to PING or PingPlotter?

If you try pinging to "66.218.71.84", what do you get? This is what www.yahoo.com resolves to for me.

Can you try other hosts? Does www.pingplotter.com, or www.winfiles.com behave anyh differently?

No Zone Alarm running... and this is why I am puzzled. PP says "couldn't resolve host name" to everything with exception to that ip for yahoo, which eventually said that it couldn't find them and 100% packet loss. Now in msdos I get "request timed out". 4 packets sent and o received and 4 lost?? Is there some setting someone somewhere could have flicked on or off to prevent me from pinging? Is there some other place I should look or check or inquire with? Thanks for your time.

The fact that you can't resolve names is the real stumper here. Your inability to ping to the IP address could be related, though.

It really seems like you have *something* blocking access to the internet to PING and Ping Plotter. This is what you've got to get tracked down. Do you use a proxy server? Are you certain that there is no software running on your computer that may block DNS lookups? Have you installed any software to aid DNS name resolution?

What operating system are you running?

Thanks. Your question regarding a proxy server made me think some more. I was told I had direct un-restricted access, but the fact that I am on a college campus leads me to believe that was a line of crap, especially given my recent problems. I can't find any other reason for my problems. So, I am thinking that yes I do and perhaps someone is placing some sort of restriction on this feature. I have not installed any software regarding DNS in any way and I am using Good ol' WIN98. I am currently contacting someone to get a definitive ansewer regarding the DNS block thing and whether or not I have a proxy. One would think, they would have supplied this information,..when they knew full well what I am up against here in the first place. Sheesh. I appreciate your help and as soon as I find out more info, I will let you know. Thanks.
