I am wondering if this type of spiking ping time is normal or not?

Hi Austinite,

Thanks for writing in! I can help to make sense of your results for you.

Now it's tough to give any kind of diagnosis with only a screenshot, however, your results do seem "spikey" to me. This is the kind of connection that would have a really high Jitter score.

Looking at the AVG column for hop #2 though, it does seem higher than normal and the values seem to carry through the rest of the route...

I'd recommend making sure that your Jitter graph is set to display - click PingPlotter -> Preferences -> Display to see those options. The Jitter graph will appear just above the Timeline Graph if you have enough screen space for your display preferences.

Next, enable the MAX and Jitter columns by right-clicking a column header and making your selections from the list.

Then trace directly to your router IP (hop #1) along with tracing to any sites or services you're having trouble with. That way if the trace to your router is green, while your trace to Google has trouble, you can eliminate any local network problems.

Finally, double-click on a hop row to open its own Timeline Graph. Use these graphs to compare patterns of packet loss and latency, and look for where the problem pattern starts.

I hope this helps! Let us know if you have any other questions.
