I have a DSL 1.6M connection from BellAtlantic who uses QWest as the ISP. I have lots of trouble getting DSL speed. I'm trying to figure out whether it's my DSL modem, connection, ISP or just some other place on the net. I'm doing this pin-pointing so I can go back to Bell and let them know the problem is with them.

Every time and site I ping the beginning path is typically ...
Bellatlantic.net,
IConNet.net,
inet.qwest.net,
SprintLink,
then other sites.

My question is: are bellatlantic, iconnet, inet.qwest.net and sprintlink all part of my ISP. Is there any way to figure this out? Because my pings take the same beginning route I figured all three sites are part of my ISP.

I need to know this because I often experience bad times and hangups at the iconnet and sprintlink sites, as you can see in this example ...

Target Name: www.deja.com
IP: 208.10.192.237

1 30 ms 27 ms 27 ms 28 ms 31 ms adsl-151-197-16-1.bellatlantic.net [151.197.16.1]
2 35 ms 31 ms 31 ms 29 ms 31 ms [151.197.5.66]
3 30 ms 30 ms 30 ms 34 ms 31 ms Serial5-0-0.core1.phl1.IConNet.NET [209.3.188.181]
4 60 ms 156 ms 63 ms 62 ms 59 ms Serial3-1-0.core1.teb1.IConNet.NET [204.245.69.177]
5 160 ms 137 ms 117 ms 116 ms 134 ms [205.171.4.217]
6 62 ms 61 ms 66 ms 64 ms 64 ms [205.171.17.126]
7 63 ms 63 ms 67 ms 63 ms 65 ms nyc-core-02.inet.qwest.net [205.171.17.2]
8 80 ms 81 ms 85 ms 82 ms 82 ms [205.171.5.252]
9 85 ms 80 ms 81 ms 82 ms 85 ms chi-brdr-01.inet.qwest.net [205.171.20.66]
10 618 ms * 615 ms 554 ms 632 ms [205.171.4.254]
11 * 575 ms * 589 ms * sl-bb11-chi-2-1.sprintlink.net [144.232.10.157]
12 * 601 ms * * * sl-bb12-chi-7-0.sprintlink.net [144.232.10.6]
13 587 ms 552 ms 580 ms 561 ms * sl-bb10-kc-7-1.sprintlink.net [144.232.9.117]
14 * * 576 ms 551 ms * [144.232.9.254]
15 579 ms 544 ms 590 ms * * sl-gw11-fw-0-0-0.sprintlink.net [144.232.11.54]
16 578 ms 552 ms 588 ms * * sl-smartt-1-0-0-T3.sprintlink.net [144.228.135.6]
17 * * * * * Destination Address Unreachable []
18 * * * * * []

Hi

This one pretty clearly points to a problem between hop 9 and 10. Hop 9 has decent performance (not fantastic, but decent), hop 10 has Horrid performance.

9 85 ms 80 ms 81 ms 82 ms 85 ms chi-brdr-01.inet.qwest.net [205.171.20.66]
10 618 ms * 615 ms 554 ms 632 ms [205.171.4.254]

Hop 11 is sprintlink.net - it *looks* like hop 10 belongs to qwest.net. Even so, the link between hop 9 and 10 is very clearly the problem. Dropped packets and response times that are reflected down the path.

This almost looks like a temporary problem between qwest and sprintlink. Unfortunately, it's far enough from your ISP that you can't directly complain to anyone - you really have to start at your ISP.

I'm guessing that you have other problems with other paths as well (since it sounds like the first 4 hops are the same, but not others). Do you get good response times to other sites?

Just looking at your times here, your first few hops are not *clearly* to blame for your slowdowns (to this or other sites. This site has huge problems which are originating between hop 9 and 10). If you're reliably getting 60 ms pings into hop 6, then it's not Bellatlantic or Icon.net. It could be qwest.net (if your problem routes usually go through them).

Check some other sites and see how they look. Also, pictures of the problem would be great (you can e-mail them to support@nessoft.com and I'll edit the post to include them so others can see them as well).

Let me know how other sites look and I'll see if I can add any analysis to them.

Good luck!

Thanks,
Pete
